If you want a more unique place to stay in the San Juan Islands than a downtown hotel, Lakedale is my top recommendation. It’s one of the most unique places I’ve ever stayed in Washington state. The property sits on 82 acres in the middle of San Juan Island with three private spring-fed lakes, and lodging ranges from a traditional 10-room lodge to log cabins to canvas cabins (basically glamping) to lakeside campsites.

I’ve stayed in the log cabins twice and loved both trips. The first time was a dog-friendly stay with my pups, and the second was with family and friends. Both times, the property felt remote and relaxing in a way that’s hard to describe until you’re there. You’re only about 15 minutes from Friday Harbor, but it feels like you’ve left civilization entirely.

What makes Lakedale work so well for families is the variety of on-site activities. You can swim, paddleboard, kayak, fish, or rent a rowboat on the lakes. Rosario Resort sits on the eastern shore of Orcas Island on East Sound (the body of water that gives the island its horseshoe shape). It’s a historic property built around the 1909 Moran Mansion, originally the home of shipbuilder and former Seattle mayor Robert Moran. I’ve walked the grounds and toured parts of the property, and the setting is stunning, especially the waterfront view and the historic mansion itself.

Moran State Park (Orcas Island)

Moran State Park is where my friends and I camp every year on Orcas Island and is one of my favorite traditions in the Pacific Northwest. The park covers over 5,000 acres and has campsites on both Cascade Lake and Mountain Lake, with boat access to both. Each site has bathrooms with running water, toilets, and a quarter shower you can pay to use. There’s a small store open during the day at the north end of the park with snacks, ice cream, and basic amenities, plus a gas station about 10 minutes north of the park for firewood and more food.

I’ve camped here and can confirm the experience of waking up to whales blowing offshore is genuinely unforgettable.

The campground has 20 campsites, some right on the water, plus restrooms, a small play area, and easy access to Lime Kiln Point State Park (the “Whale Watch Park”) just a few minutes south.

It’s a great middle ground for families who want to introduce kids to camping without going fully roughing it.

Doe Bay Resort Camping (Orcas Island)

For something more in the rustic-glamping space, Doe Bay Resort offers tent sites alongside their yurts, cabins, and domes.
