Hostels always seemed like huge party houses to me. Since I work on the road, I didn’t see how I was going to get my work done while staying there. Plus there’s that movie Hostel, which I’ve never seen but only know very bad things happen to people in a hostel.
All Ages Stay in Hostels
I thought everyone would be 18 years old, but that wasn’t the case at all. I saw multiple families with their kids coming down to breakfast each morning. You can choose to get a private room in a hostel, so I’m assuming that was cheaper for them than a regular hotel room. I also saw a good number of elderly couples staying there. Times have definitely changed.
Safety is a Priority
Many Offer Activities
Why pay for a tour when you can get one from the hostel you’re staying at? Some even have a local volunteer that leads you around for free. When I’m home, I volunteer at HI Hostel in Seattle and am in charge of taking guests to see the Mariners play baseball during the season. Many of them have great activity calendars, so make sure to check them out if you don’t have any plans.
Security is Taken Seriously
There’s a Sense of Community
Many hostels encourage their guests to mingle and hang out together. The breakfast at the Generator Hostel in Stockholm was so popular, people who weren’t staying at the hostel came to get breakfast. I was planning on going to a coffee shop to get work done, but decided to stay there based on how nice the whole set up was.
Loud Parties Aren’t Allowed
My main fear wasn’t true at all. Most hostels have a curfew of 10 PM that’s strictly enforced. At the very end of my trip in Iceland, I was so worn out that sleep won over exploring the night life each night. Even though the girls in my room went out, they were all quiet when they came back. Just bring a sleep mask and ear plugs, and you’ll be golden.
Have you stayed at a hostel before? What was your experience like?
