Ireland is one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever been to, and each part of my road trip continued to amaze me. For part of my trip, I was staying in Limerick visiting friends and decided one morning we had to go to the Cliffs of Moher. We grabbed breakfast to go and headed out on the hour and a half drive towards the western coast of Ireland.
To get there, you go through the small town of Liscannor in County Clare, which is beautiful. The town is full of small houses on the coast and plenty of green grass for their livestock to roam. I saw several signs for local milk and eggs being sold, but we couldn’t stop because we were on a time crunch. I’d love to go back next time to explore this area more.
The cliffs get their name from an old fort from 1780 which used to be here called Moher. It was torn down in 1808, but O’Brien’s Tower (which currently stands) was built in 1835. Its main purpose was to allow visitors to have a higher view to see the ocean and the surrounding area. On a clear day, you can see the Aran Islands and the Twelve Pins and Maumturks mountain ranges north of the cliffs.
To access the cliffs, you’ll have to pay €6.00 per adult. This allows you to access the visitor center as well, which is full of informative facts about the history of the area. There’s also a cafeteria to grab lunch at – I highly recommend the clam chowder in a bread bowl!
If you want to head to the top of O’Brien’s Tower, it’s an additional €2.00 per adult. I recommend it though, especially if you brought your binoculars or camera. It makes it a lot easier to get a shot without a million other tourists around as well.
The only tip I have when coming here is to bring a jacket. I came on a warm summer day, but it was so windy! I was freezing as soon as I started walking towards the cliffs, so I can only imagine how the weather is in the winter. Other than that, enjoy the view and make a day of it.
Have you been to the Cliffs of Moher before?
