Alaska has been somewhere I’ve always wanted to go to after seeing picture after picture of the state’s stunning scenery. The cute fishing towns, the dramatic landscape, the sea life – I want to explore it all. Luckily, I’ll get a chance to do just that in September.
I’m excited to announce I’ve partnered with Bruce Hudson for his Alaskan photography cruise this September. I first met Bruce when I took a photography workshop with him in Seattle to enhance my skills, and was impressed with his patience and knowledge in teaching the class. I plan to finish the rest of his speciality classes, but when I found out about this cruise, I knew I had to go. It leaves from Seattle, so no flying is required if you live close. The dates are Sunday, September 4th to Sunday, September 11th, 2016, which makes it an easy week’s vacation.
In addition to being on a beautiful cruise, Bruce will be teaching photography classes on the boat. There’s nothing worse than being on a trip, seeing the most picturesque scene in front of you, and having no idea how to capture it. Shooting on automatic is an easy way to take pictures, but the effect isn’t at all the same as knowing your manual settings. Pictures that might not turn out on automatic (too dark, too light, etc.) can be adjusted to get the pictures to come out as close to the reality that you’re seeing it in. The price of the cruise includes lessons on boat and in person. When we get off the ship to explore Alaska by land, Bruce will right there to show you how to get the best shot with your camera.
Sunday– We depart Seattle at 4pm; join your fellow safari travelers that evening for a discussion about your upcoming adventure and an overview of the week.
Monday– At sea, time to explore the ship and all of the amenities on board the ship. Your first photo class starts at 2pm where Bruce will review some of the fundamentals of photography that you’ll need on your trip. This is also where you will have your first “show and tell” and have opportunity to share some your favorite images that you have prepared!
Tuesday– Ketchikan, the self-described “salmon capital of the world!” It’s the southernmost town of the inside passage. At 1pm we will meet up for a walking tour of this iconic city and the famous Creek Street. A fun and specific photo assignment will be given to enhance your experience!
Wednesday– In the morning, the ship will be traveling up the Tracy Arm Fjord and you will witness the epic Twin Sawyer Glaciers with great photo opportunities! Later that day we will arrive at Alaska’s capital city of Juneau and travel to the massive Mendenhall Glacier just outside of the town. While at the glacier Bruce will be providing photo guidance and assigning photo assignments meant to enhance the spectacular landscape.
Friday– At Sea, the afternoon class will give you the opportunity to showcase the images you have created thus far! Critiques will be offered for those brave souls who would like them!
Saturday– Victoria, time for a night photo shoot! To prepare for your night photo shoot, you will meet with Bruce in the afternoon for some tips on night shooting techniques that you’ll need to achieve some amazing results! Once we arrive around 7-ish we will travel downtown to the heart of the city. It is simply beautiful!
Sunday– We’re home! We will say our farewells!
While the itinerary itself sounds amazing, wait until you watch the actual video made a few years ago. The sites they see are just gorgeous.
