When I travel, I usually try to stay at the hotel as little as possible. There’s so much I want to see in the city I’m staying at so there’s no point wasting time at my hotel. When I recently stayed at Alderbrook Resort and Spa, I actually wanted to stay at the hotel the whole time. In fact, I never left the entire weekend I was there! I had so much fun relaxing on the Hood Canal.
How to Get There
Alderbrook is located on the Kitsap Peninsula, which is west of Seattle. You can take several ferries, including the Kingston ferry from Edmonds or the Southworth ferry from Fauntleroy. There wasn’t much traffic when I went, so I just drove down through Tacoma and headed west.
The grounds are beautiful, so it’s hard to decide what to do first. I relaxed in my room for a bit and then walked around to see what there was to do. A wedding was going on at the same time, which was fun to watch during cocktail hour. I loved walking on the pier and seeing the boats docked there. Here’s a taste of what else there is to do at Alderbrook.
They have a beautiful pool that’s right by the water. It was raining for part of the time I was there, which made it even more cozy to be inside the pool while looking through the windows. You have a great view of all the boats that go by from there as well.
There’s an outdoor grill you can sit at with a view of the water and order drinks and food. They also have multiple fire pits around the area where you can hang out with your drink. When I was there, a wedding that was going on provided plenty of entertainment during happy hour.
When you stay here, you have to have at least one meal at their restaurant. I loved how everything was locally sourced and displayed creatively. The picture below is how they present the butter for the bread, which is on a tiny tree stump! It was adorable. I had the scallops for my entree and ended with a dessert featuring Rainier cherries. They even make their own brand of wine and cider. Everything I had was amazing.
One of the problems when I want to go away for vacation is what to do with my dogs. I have two decent sized pups, so they’re not allowed many places. Not only did Alderbrook say they were welcome, but they greeted them with their own dog beds and dog bowls! They had a blast hanging out with me all weekend.
Speaking of bringing dogs, another hard part when I travel with them is getting the dogs enough exercise. Sometimes the hotel isn’t in an ideal walking location, but my dogs definitely need to get out. Alderbrook has three miles of their own hiking trails just behind the hotel, so that problem was solved. I hiked with my dogs both days exploring the trails, so they were plenty tired by the end of the day.
They have a pier with a water center at the end of it so you can rent stand up paddle boards, kayaks, and several other water sports equipment. It was so nice to be able to walk out and rent a kayak when I wanted instead of having to make an appointment and drive somewhere. It seemed that many of the guests were enjoying these as well.
If you’re looking for a relaxing getaway in the Pacific Northwest, head to Alderbrook. You’ll love being able to kick back and relax when you want or be active when you’re ready. You won’t want to leave this resort!
